Dave’s Stack – What is Captain Blue Hen Reading? – August 9

What is “Dave’s Stack”? The “Stack” is my weekly pile of new comics. “Dave” is me–I work at Captain Blue Hen Comics and write and edit for the website. You might know Paul, Joe, Jason, Madge, and Thomas–I am the other one. Long-time readers remember “Top o’ My Stack” and “Dave’s Stack” as a look my reading habits. This is the fifth installment of the refreshed (but irregularly-published) “Stack” and I am giving you the whole list of what I am getting this week plus a brief review of what I look forward to most and the book I will read first. (I repeat the heck out of the title’ Dave’s Stack – What is Captain Blue Hen Reading? – August 9 ‘ to get a better SEO grade if that makes any sense.)

Dave's Stack - What is Captain Blue Hen Reading? - August 9Featuring at the Top o’ My Stack:
Writer: Stan Lee
Artist: Jack Kirby

Reprinting JOURNEY INTO MYSTERY (1952 series) #112 by Stan and Jack and featuring an “untold story” about Thor fighting the Hulk (Sub-Mariner is there too!), TRUE BELIEVERS KIRBY 100TH THOR VS HULK #1 is a must buy and must read for me. My very favorite Marvel character is the Hulk. I also love Thor. I collect Hulk comics and Thor and Sub-Mariner and Avengers back issues. I celebrate nearly every thing Jack Kirby has ever touched. Thor’s first series at Marvel was Journey Into Mystery and while I do have a bunch of JiM issues, I do not have an original Journey Into Mystery #112. I do have multiple reprints in a couple different books and have read this before, but I must have this True Believers which is a reprint of this issue for a buck to celebrate Jack Kirby’s 100th birthday (and the upcoming Thor Ragnarok features both characters). It will give me an excuse to read this again. Plus the title of this reprint is “Thor vs Hulk”. I know that is a nutso reason to want this, but such is the state of a comic book collector.

From Synopsis for “The Mighty Thor Battles the Incredible Hulk!” at

“While flying through the city, Thor happens upon two groups of children arguing over the who is the stronger between Thor and Hulk. Interested in the debate, Thor lands to see what all the commotion is about, and the children ask him if he knows who is the stronger of the two.

Thor recounts for them his last encounter with Hulk however, goes into a part of the story that was not previously recorded.”
