Sovereigns brings back old school characters Dr. Solar, Magnus Robot Fighter, Dr. Spektor, and Turok Son of Stone. When you here those names, you may be looking at the publisher and wondering why this is not from Valiant or Acclaim or even Gold Key instead of Dynamite. These characters came out of the sixties and the first renewal was from the first Valiant (we are on the third Valiant if you were not sure). This is actually Dynamite’s second attempt at rejuvenating them which came after a brief stay at Dark Horse Comics. The reason they keep trying is because these characters are good ones and they have been successful in the past.
I have been a fan of Magnus and Turok since I saw the first versions in back issues. I was particularly fond of the Russ Manning art on Magnus. While I was not old enough to see those versions on the new racks, I did buy first (and subsequent) issues of Solar, Magnus, and Turok when they came out from the first incarnation of Valiant. Those early issues from Jim Shooter and company were excellent.
So, being a fan of the characters themselves, I will continue to watch the new versions. Try this out for a buck!
Dynamite Entertainment says:
“The beginning of an epic tale that will change everything you know about some of comicdom’s greatest and longest-tenured heroes! Solar, Magnus, Dr. Spektor & Turok! Apart, they’ve saved countless lives a hundred times over. Together, they form a team that has protected the world in the past, present and future. Now, they will be reunited one last time to face a threat that will forever change their legacy and bring them face to face with their final destiny! Plus! Three backup features introducing the all-new, all-different, never-before-seen heroes, Magnus, Turok and Dr. Spektor. Wait – what?!”
