Why am I interested in Patsy Walker as a character? She’s had a strange road in the Marvel Universe. Patsy began as a teenage humor character in the 1940s and later became a romance character appearing in her own comic and with Millie and Hedy. Patsy first appeared in the Marvel Universe in the original Fantastic Four Annual #3. Later readers found out that the humor and romance comics were comic books in the Marvel Universe that were written by her mother. Patsy turned herself into a superhero by hanging out with the Avengers and later donning Tigra‘s original costume. Later she joined the Defenders. Now Patsy is one of the main characters on the Netflix show Jessica Jones.
I was a fan of Hellcat in Defenders and enjoyed later finding out her origin in Avengers. When my daughter was born, I started a classic romance comics collection focusing on Marvel romance–and later humor–titles like Tessie the Typist, Millie the Model, and Patsy Walker. Initially it was for my daughter but I have become interested myself! Plus I now enjoy her character on Jessica Jones (great show!).
Marvel says: “PATSY WALKER has managed to escape her past, her enemies and Hell itself (literally), but nothing compares to job hunting in New York City! Between trying to make rent and dodging (literal) bullets, Patsy barely has time to deal with her mother’s exploitative romance comics about her childhood resurfacing, much less how they start to interfere with her work and dating life. As she goes from living a double life to a triple, what the Hell is Patsy Walker supposed to do? Raise your (literal) claws for PATSY WALKER, AKA HELLCAT!”
