Steve Dillon Signing to Support Hero Initiative

What is Hero Initiative?

Steve Dillon, artist for Wolverine: Origins and Preacher, will appear at Captain Blue Hen on Wednesday, September 24 from 4pm-7pm.

Mr. Dillon’s tour benefits the comic industry not-for-profit organization called Hero Initiative. Very soon, we will tell you about some interesting ways you can help raise money for this fantastic group. But first, what is Hero Initiative? The best way I can explain is to simply quote the website:

“In late 2000, a consortium of comic publishers came up with the idea to create a financial safety net for comic creators, much in the same fashion that exists in almost any other trade from plumbing to pottery.

The Hero Initiative is the first-ever federally chartered not-for-profit corporation dedicated strictly to helping comic book creators in need. Hero creates a financial safety net for yesterdays’ creators who may need emergency medical aid, financial support for essentials of life, and an avenue back into paying work. It’s a chance for all of us to give back something to the people who have given us so much enjoyment.”

Still not sure what Hero Initiative does? Jim Valentino wrote a great profile on Hero Initiative for About.com.

Oldest Animation Discovered

A 5,200-year-old bowl found in Iran’s Burnt City in the 1970s features a series of five images that researchers have only recently identified as being sequential. Spin the bowl and it appears that a goat is leaping to snatch leaves from a tree.

Italian archaeologists found the pottery at a burial site, but not until years later did Iranian archaeologist Dr. Mansur Sadjadi notice the animation aspect.

While no one questions the early instance of animation, researchers have been at odds over the significance of the earthenware bowl’s artwork. It was originally thought to depict the goat eating from the Assyrian Tree of Life, but archaeologists now assert that it predates the Assyrian civilization by a thousand years.

Iran’s Cultural Heritage, Tourism and Handicrafts Organization (CHTHO) has made an 11-minute documentary on the discovery.

Operation Baking GALS

OK, so I very rarely post, and I will admit up front that this post clearly has NOTHING to do with comics. I apologize in advance, but I believe that this is a really cool opportunity and that makes it worth spreading the word.

Several food bloggers got together after one received a letter from a soldier and decided that the men and women over seas need a bit more support from those of us back home. Instead of sending them razors and deodorant (not that they don’t need those also) this group of bloggers banded together and decided to send some homemade goodness. Who doesn’t love a chocolate chip cookie?

I have decided to help and signed my self up. If anyone is interested, the next round of delectable delights is set to ship between the 23rd and 30th of August. You have to sign up with Operation Baking GALS to receive addresses and names of soldiers to ship to. This also lets the soldiers know who they should be accepting packages from.

Click here for more information on Operation Baking GALS.

Let’s get together and give a little support!

Huge Bat-Love + Lots of Free Time =

Sure Batman could see this from the Bat-Plane, but wouldn’t it be more effective to just dial 911?

An Interview with Jay Faerber - The Demise of Noble Causes

By: Joey Davidson

This post is also running as a feature over at ComicsBulletin.com. Check it out!

Funny how innocent correspondence can turn simple questions into an exclusive reveal. While talking about his Image properties currently under production, Jay Faerber revealed that the montly title Noble Causes would be coming to a close with issue #40 in November. He addresses some of the considerations that take place between creator and publisher when deciding how to proceed with monthly titles. In addition to his insight, I also got a chance to catch up with what’s new with Dynamo 5 and Gemini.

Joey Davidson: When I hand Noble Causes over to a friend and say, “read this,” they always ask me for some sort of description. My answer always stems from something like, “think a really good soap opera meets superheroes.” Have you compared some of the melodramatics in your books to daytime TV?

Jay Faerber: Noble Causes has always been unabashed soap opera, and was absolutely influenced by daytime (and nighttime) soaps. What initially appealed to me about soap operas was that, with the daytime dramas at least, they have so much airtime to fill that they can afford to go far more in-depth with their characterizations than nighttime TV or movies. Characters can be far more complex and multi-layered. Plus, like comics, soap operas tend to really mine their old continuity. Daytime TV fans can be every bit as obsessive as comic fans (and I mean that in a good way!). So there are a lot of similarities, and I chose to simply shine a spotlight on them and play up those similarities.
